What is the FAS Scheme and when was it set up?

The FAS scheme was set up in 2000 under the umbrella of Lake District Enterprise. Its correct title is Local Training Initiative (LTI). Lake District Enterprise is the sponsor of the scheme and without their help and support the scheme would not function. They provide the working capital for the scheme which is then reimbursed by FAS.

Where is the scheme located?

Our office is located within the Tourist Office on New St, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo. We provide computer training facilities for upto 12 trainees at any one time.

What is the scheme about?

The LTI has an extensive computer training programme in place that is runs over an 11-month period. We cover all modules of the ECDL, advanced ECDL, contributing to the Lake District web-site, Sage Payroll and general office duties. Trainees also help out in the Tourist Office and certain administration tasks within the office.

Who provides the funding?

All our computers have been provided by FAS or by grant funding which was available to us e.g. AIB Better Ireland and POBAL. FAS also fund all of the training on the scheme. Lake District Enterprise is also involved in lots of fund raising ideas.

Who is eligible for the scheme?

Any person is eligible for the scheme as long as he or she is not working. Obviously you must have an interest in learning computers as the course is very computer orientated. It is a full time course -35 hours a week. Most of our trainees also secure work placement during their training course. On successful completion of the course the trainee undertakes FETAC exams in a number of the computer modules.
